Holiday Spotlight on The Bookery, Beloved Used Bookstore With Everything From Children's Books To Collectibles at 326 Main Street
We're pleased to include The Bookery in our Holiday Spotlight Series.
We're spotlighting many of the unique businesses that make up Downtown Placerville so that you can learn of the opportunities you have to shop locally and support local businesses, their families, and ultimately our community.
We connected with them to learn more about The Bookery at 326 Main Street.
How would you describe your business to a friend?
Used Books - everything from children's books to find collectibles.
Why did you start the business? What do you love most about it?
We love books!
Nancy worked for the folks who started The Bookery and later brought Celia on board. The original owners were not looking at growing the business; Nancy and Celia thought they could improve on a good idea.
We love our customers and we love that we've been here long enough to watch a generation of young readers grow up and bring in the next generation of young readers.
We delight in acquiring good and unusual books that our customers will appreciate.
What is something you wish people know about your business?
Just how hard we work to provide a wonderful brick-and-mortar store in the age of the internet.
We also want them to know that we have a small selection of vinyl records and CDs.
What is a common question you get?
Of course our product and service is helping people find the book they want, either in our store or by special order.
But bookstores are often considered information centers of a town, so we get all kinds of other questions, from local history to where to find a good burger.
What is the biggest compliment your business has received?
We routinely get told that we “are the best bookstore I've ever seen”. We never tire of hearing that!!!
Why did you choose to be on Main Street in Placerville?
The store opened on Main Street 37 years ago. It is the best place to be for local and walk-in traffic.
Do you have any upcoming specials or new products that people should know about?
We have new books coming in every day and we try hard to always make our books a good deal.
Are you involved with any local non-profits or community groups you would like to give a shout out to?
We are on our 8th year of doing the “Dogs of Main Street” calendar. All the proceeds go to support the local animal shelter. We are very proud of this.
